Walk-in (Italian) shower: materials, waterproofing and recommended systems

A successful walk-in (Italian-style) shower relies on four things: flawless waterproofing, a correct floor slope for drainage, suitable non-slip tiles and a quality glass screen. Waterproofing is by far the most important — get it wrong and water damage follows. Here is what to choose.

Waterproofing — the critical step

Use a proven sealing system under the tiles: waterproof membranes and build boards from specialists such as Schlüter-Systems or Wedi guarantee a watertight base. This is not the area to cut costs.

Drainage & floor slope

  • A gentle, even slope (about 1–2%) toward the drain.
  • A linear drain for a clean, modern look, or a centre drain for classic layouts.

Tiles & finishes

  • Non-slip floor tiles (rating R10–R11) for safety.
  • Large-format wall tiles or natural stone for a premium feel.
  • Tempered-glass screen for an open, easy-to-clean design.

Frequently asked questions

Can a walk-in shower be installed in any bathroom?

Usually yes, but the floor must accommodate the slope and drain. In apartments, the existing screed and drainage height need checking first.

How do you avoid leaks?

With a continuous waterproofing membrane correctly bonded at walls and floor before tiling — exactly what our teams install as standard.
